Driver's Education for Teens
Driver's education for teens is the classroom portion of driving school process. There are several ways of completing driver's education, in a private driving school classroom, online over the internet, or in a public or private high school.
In private driving school
classrooms like Safety First
Safety First offers driver education in our Westlake classroom. Our Westlake Village/Thousand Oaks classroom has been recently remodeled including advanced audio / video equipment usually reserved for corporate training environments. All class materials are presented in power point format with the lecturer explaining specific points using a white board to illustrate as necessary. Modern videos are shown to reinforce the lecture portion. All materials used in the class are DMV approved.
We make the class fun and interesting but we also ensure that our students learn. Students who take our driver's education program have averaged above a 99% first time pass rate for the DMV written permit test. The way our program is structured, students will take a practice exam four times before they get to the DMV for the real one. Each question on each exam is thoroughly explained by our experienced instructors.
Our current schedule lets the student complete driver's education in 4 sessions. The sessions are topic specific and can be taken in any order so it does not matter which session is first or last.
See the 2010 schedule page
to see exactly which session is happening on which date.
Summer Schedule
During summer, we offer sessions Tuesday through Friday and Saturday. A student can complete drivers ed either by attending the Tuesday through Friday classes or by going to 4 Saturday classes.
School Season Schedule
During the school year, we offer classes on Saturdays. A student can complete driver's ed by attending 4 of these classes.
The Rules for Driver's
Education at Safety First:
Be on time
During the school year our classes start at 9:00 am and end at 4:00 PM. Please do not be late as we cannot let you in once the class has started. We also cannot allow students to continue the class if they come back late from a break. We are regulated by the DMV on this point especially so please understand that the staff cannot let the student in the class if they are late.
Don't disrupt the class
If a student disrupts the class he or she will be asked to leave. This includes talking when not appropriate. At the discretion of the instructor, they may or may not be allowed to return another day to make up for that class.
All students must pay
attention and participate
Students are not allowed to sleep or perform other activities during class. All cell phones and pagers must be turned off. No game boys or other devices may be used during class. Each day of class, there are several written tests, worksheets and quizzes. All students must complete these and work with the rest of the class as required.
No partial session make
ups
If a student misses part of a session for any reason, they must make up all of the session at a later date.
Online Driver's Education
Online driver's education is available at Safety First Driving School. For students whose schedule does not allow them to attend our classroom located at 3055 East Thousand Oaks Blvd.#4, Westlake Village, CA 91362 and for students who prefer to study at their own pace, online driver's education is the way to go. The online course is done through a standard web browser like the one you're using now and can be completed at your own pace.
When you register with Safety First, you will receive an e-mail that will be sent to you electronically. On that e-mail you will receive the web address/URL http://safetyfirstds.com/driving/login.php that you will need to go to in order to get started with your online Driver’s Education along with your Username and Password.
Once you complete the driver's education program, your DMV certificates will be mailed to you and you can go and take the DMV permit test.
Safety First driver's education course is the only one endorsed by the Driving School Association of California.

In public or private high
school
Some schools still offer
driver's education as part of the school curriculum. It usually
takes one period for an entire semester and is called Auto Safety.
Westlake high school and Conejo high school are two that still offer
driver's education. Most public high schools no longer offer driver's
education classes. This is primarily due to budget constraints
facing public education. In the mid 1980s, California spent about
$30 million per year on driver education and training programs in public
schools, now, it spends about $1 million per year.
